Funniest thing I've read all day!

“Tiger is the best and most advanced personal computer operating system on the market,” writes Walt Mossberg for the Wall Street Journal. “Its key feature, called Spotlight, is the first universal, integrated search system ever offered as part of a mainstream consumer PC operating system.” He adds that “Spotlight is only one of the impressive new features in Tiger, which will be free on all new Macs and will cost $129 for existing users.” [Apr 28, 2005]

Just read that last line again. "free on all new Macs and will cost $129 for existing users." Last time I checked you had to pay for Macs new or otherwise. This frivolous article neglects to make mention that users buy Mac hardware in most cases (Linux users excluded) for the Operating System OSX - it's not free!

Apple and RSS

Great to see Apple continuing its support of RSS. Safari which is the name given to Apple's web browser will have inbuilt support for RSS in the form of an RSS aggregator in the upcoming release of Tiger OSX 10.4.

Google's My History service

Looks like Google are at it again (note: They have a must read blog). If you go to http://www.google.com/searchhistory/ you can sign up for a new Google Account. Which can also be your Gmail, Froogle or a number of other accounts that Google have, I found this out later, I initially setup another account with the same email address I had used for Gmail and it did not say anything about a duplicate? Bit strange? Anyway - the service Google are releasing allows you to review the history of all your Google searches. It allows you to view a calendar graphic you can use to navigate through all your search requests.

TopDesk - Apple Exposé for Windows

Great tool for getting to your open windows fast. Designed for Windows XP this little gem can be downloaded in Trial version form to see for yourself. This application was previously written using OpenGL, yet the newer version is using Direct X. Well worth trying!

Tour guide for Google Maps

Touching on from my post about the WOW application for 2005. A great fan site was created to list some interesting places you can go visit using this service. Definitely worth having a look.

My current WOW app for 2005

I'm cheating a little, as last years WOW app is also related to a product called Keyhole (purchased by Google). The same product was announced today to help power Google Maps my new WOW app for 2005. The thing that really does it for me is the Ajax or DTML or Request. (What is it again?) - The part that allows the web application to keep talking back to the server without a page refresh. Now keep in mind that Google Maps was very cool yesterday, the part that really knocks my socks off is where the Keyhole product comes in. Keyhole is what Paul Thurrott summed up best as "Think magic carpet!". The application allows you to seamlessly fly through satellite images of the globe (primarily the US) in a really neat way. What Google Maps does is put those same satellite maps on top of the relatively empty Google Maps - maps. Enough said go check out 1 Redmond Way, Washington.

Update 6/4: Its XMLHttpRequest - I really should have looked that up.
