This looks like a great first version for Google. It took a little to get use to with the reader showing empty for new entries expecting that you had read all the new articles. I'll have a bit more of a play around. Scoble (MS Geek) chimes in and says he is going to stick with NewGator as synchronization is important to him. I have to agree with that. Having my feeds viewable online and getting the read/unread data sent back down to Outlook on my Tablet PC along with both my Pocket PC and Smartphone is a must! Can't see Google implementing anything like that soon unless they release free WiFi ;-)

News Gator can't do the basics

Going on Robert Scoble's recommendation I signed up for my News Gator (first time I've used the nofollow link option) account to allow me to continue working in Outlook when reading my RSS feeds and have all the flexibility of Outlook. (Eg Forward email, assign reminders and create tasks for RSS items). Another thing that attracted me to News Gator was that my reading information (read / unread items) would carry through to New Gator Online so that I could catch up anywhere.

It all was looking good for News Gator and me until I had two days off reading this week. When I fired up Outlook to start my reading I noticed a number of my favorite news feeds had only 10 items unread. I thought it was strange that a large number of these sites which usually have more then 10 items a day eg Slashdot and Bink.nu to be sitting at 10 unread items. So I went and visited a number of these sites to find that News Gator had just removed the older items and only showed the last 10 new items along with the unread items. (I'm guessing this was the feed size for that site) Now am I missing something here? The whole idea of me subscribing to these feeds is so that I can read every single article that is posted. Now that I have changed my work flow to accommodate News Gator it makes me extremely mad that I have to go back to my old reader and have a large gap of time that I can't get back between when I last updated to the current feed items.

It looks like News Gator is one of those good ideas, poor implementation services. I can’t wait for Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer to control the feed information as I see this as being the most important parts of RSS consumption. I will cancel my News Gator account today - so long News Gator.

I've been thinking about this form factor ever since Bill Gates' keynote at WinHEC 2005. I could see this form being extremely popular for those that want more from a Pocket PC and in some respect less from a full size Tablet PC. Motion have been very competitive price wise which could lead to a high volume of units being sold. Engadget and Scoble have more news on this new Tablet.

It's always great when you find a new feature in a product you have been using for - God knows how long? It is one of the reasons why I continue spending hours a day reading through my blogroll. While I don't use the open-source product Firefox I thought I would pass this little gem Jason Calacanis (from Engadget) just found.

Someone just schooled me on the greatest feature in the history of web surfing—no WINDOWS!

If you’re in Firefox and you click on a link with your wheel mouse it will open a link in the background in another tab. No more holding down the CNTL key or let alone right mouse clicking and hitting “open in a new tab.” The button we’re talking about here is the center wheel found on most new mice… I have the Razor Diamondback which is a sick gaming mouse i got in China.

I have no idea how I just found out about this… what other productivity tip am I missing?!

Scoble pointed out an interesting search engine project called Mindset which was done by Yahoo. It can weight your search by commercial and non-commercial results .

A Yahoo! Research Labs demo that applies a new twist on search that uses machine learning technology to give you a choice: View Yahoo! Search results sorted according to whether they are more commercial or more informational (i.e., from academic, non-commercial, or research-oriented sources).
